About Time to Think: WHY was a bomb was placed on the Lockerbie Flight? Blowback?

The placement of a bomb on Pan Am Flight 103 that blew up over Lockerbie was  done for a purpose: The Navy ship, U.S.S. Vincennes, under command of Commander Will C. Rogers, fired a missile at an Iranian Airliner that had just taken off from nearby Abadan, Iran, on a scheduled flight and climbing to altitude on a well-traveled airway (the same airport and the same airway that I had often flown as captain flying Muslim pilgrims to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina). The Iranian airliner, Flight 655,  with 290 people on board, exploded and plunged to its destruction, killing every one on board, including 60 children. Another navy commander, David Carlson, publicly criticized the trigger-happy Texan, claiming that the downing of Iran Air 655 marked the "horrifying climax to Capt. Rogers's aggressiveness."

President Ronald Reagan refused to apologize for the murder of 290 people. The American people, unconcerned about the U.S.'  murder of 290 Iranians, celebrated the next day during the fourth of July holiday. President George H.W. Bush (Sr.) awarded the reckless commander, Rogers, the Legion of Merit decoration "for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as commanding officer."

Iran officials publicly stated they would retaliate—and did. They paid $11 million to the Syrian-based PFLP group to do the retaliation. The PFLP placed a bomb on Pan American Flight 103 and while cruising over Lockerbie, the bomb exploded, killing 270 people. Iranian officials stopped claiming Iran would retaliate for the murder of its 290 people: the deed had been done.

This type of culture repeated past, present, and future conduct. "Present" conduct was the conduct of FBI-DOJ personnel directing the investigation and prosecution of the Lockerbie bombing that included planting bogus evidence to shift blame from the actual murderers of 270 people to innocent parties. As for the American people, they showed no interest in these matters. They preferred the easy herd mentality and blissfully satisfactory trivial subjects handed to them by media personnel.
